CARE and climate change

Intervention Areas

WWViews

The purpose of WWViews is to demonstrate how citizens from all over the world can become an important and relevant part of political decision-making processes on a global scale.  The structure of negotiations of the climate summit must be described as mostly top-down national policies that are not necessarily in tune with the citizens that have to live with climate change and the climate policy.

There exist a few surveys of the average citizen’s attitude to the questions that are being focussed on in the climate policy debate, but it is not known how citizens around the world view problems regarding our climate. The BBC conducted a quantitative analysis in 2007 among 12.000 citizens from 21 countries which showed that 70% agreed that they should change their lifestyle to put a stop to climate change. Find out more.

This survey is up until now seemingly the only one that covers many countries and, although it gives a sense of the different standpoints, it does not give explanations for such responses.  Because of this weakness inherent in quantitative analysis, the citizens’ voices need to be heard in the climate debate on more qualified grounds.

The idea of the project

The idea of this project is to give citizens around the world the opportunity to contribute their views on substantial issues relevant to the forthcoming climate policy.  Scientific experts, political decision makers and a diverse range of other involved agents will be relevantly contributing to the formulation of questions and information material as well to inform not only the summit in 2009, but those thereafter.

The answers that the participants give will be fed into a web-based tool, which will be available to the public.

For more information on CARE Egypt's contribution to WWViews, please contact Mr Mohamed Nada (Program Manager - Governance and Civic Engagement Program) or Mr Samir Sedky (Program Manager of the Agriculture and Natural Resources) in the CARE Egypt office.
